I can say that the leaf color in the area is gone. Boring trip along the interstates with the brown drab color of the trees.
Arrived at Parkview Mobile Home and RV Park – they are a small park (RV section) but they have paved roads and sites that are level and have FHU.
And the weather is warming up – hopefully.
Saturday clear skies and warmer. Headed over to Appomattox Court House NHP. To my surprise I thought the surrender of the Confederates happened in a court house but learned that Lee surrendered in a local residential house and the name of the village was Appomattox Court house – the name they give to the county seat – oh to learn something new each day.
The NP has preserved the village,
The McLean house is where Lee surrendered to Grant.
Did a ranger talk and he walked us through the battle and surrender. Great description of the closing battle and the surrender details.
Brenda did get her junior ranger badge.
We did stop at the Confederate Cemetery where 18 Confederates and 1 Union soldier are buried.
The battle at Appomattox Station was led by General George Custer (our Monroe Michigan hero) in the only civil War battle to pit artillery against cavalry. This was the second to last battle before the surrender.
Sunday we smoked a turkey and relaxed.
Monday is heading toward Columbia, South Carolina to see family.
