October 21 Smoky Mountains

I haven’t had a chance to talk about the weather. Believe it or not, but we have been colder than St. Louis and we are way south. What happened? Or is that just a part of our adventure.

This past weekend we had 3 days of below freezing for the lows – and we survived. It was cold walking the dogs in the morning, but we brought our clothes to keep us warm and we have 2 small heaters besides the furnace which we haven’t used yet.
Here’s Hansel and Gretel staying warm.DSC_0003

WOW – we are in Pigeon Forge and it is the most congested city I have seen (next to Gatlinburg which we went thru on our way to the Smoky’s. There are more venues to attend from King Kong to Hatfield and McCoy’s. If you ever want a place to entertain kids (and adults) and have lots of money, come to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. So many places and not enough time. We probably won’t catch any shows even though we are here for a week.

Now the good part, we made it to the Smoky’s yesterday and it is unbelievable and pictures will not tell the whole story. Again, I have never seen so many cars driving through a park as here. It was bumper to bumper the majority of the way. Gave you a chance enjoy the scenery.DSC_0074 DSC_0007

We got three stamps at the National Park in my book, Smoky’s, Appalachian Trail and Valley of Tears. Visitor’s Center was great and the movie informative.DSC_0057 DSC_0047 DSC_0031 DSC_0011
As you can tell, made many stops going up to the top to take pictures. Again, they don’t do justice, you need to see for yourself. Did not see any wildlife except for the turkeys. DSC_0017We were on bear watch but despite the fact that there are 1500 black bears in this park, we did not see one.

We climbed the Clingsman Dome, which is the highest point in Tennessee, it was a struggle, but we made it. Walked a few feet on the Appalachian Trail and explored the area.DSC_0098 DSC_0102 DSC_0089

Today is our day of rest, except Brenda found an outlet mall that needed exploring and I am catching up on things around the RV.

River Plantation RV park is a great park to stay at. Wanted to stay for a week, but they were booked over the weekend. Got on waiting list and someone canceled so we are here for the week. Do have to move spots on Friday but that is a minor deal. We have learned that staying for more than 3 days is good for our relationship and not always having to be on the move.

We do head for Asheville North Carolina next week.  Just found a site so we will be near town and I read they have bike trails into town.  Haven’t had a chance to ride bike too much due to big hills.
